The EU plays a major role in defining standards for the production and sale of products. Safety and consumer protection issues are becoming increasingly important at the Community level.

In addition, many EU policies have a direct impact on the long-term strategies of manufacturing industries: Environmental standards, industrial policy, patents and the protection of intellectual property rights, commercial policy, etc...

Within the framework of the “Better Regulation” initiative, the European Commission is developing a targeted policy for European companies to facilitate their competitiveness and access to markets. In addition, a special policy called the European Small Business Act is specifically intended for European SMEs. These activities and the implementation of a “sustainable industrial policy” are leading to a number of concrete measures which are having a direct impact on European companies and industries.
