While European Union prerogatives in the energy field were for a long time limited to the regulation of internal gas and electricity markets and their liberalisation, its range of action has expanded considerably over the past years. Debate on the Climate Package presented by the European Commission in January 2007 has demonstrated the growing strategic and political importance which this sector has for many European players and companies, and for its citizens. The fight against climate change, the capture and storage of carbon dioxide, the development of renewable energies, energy security, improved energy efficiency, the energy mix, and recourse to nuclear power are all issues now found on the European institutional agenda. Energy issues are both a great challenge for European society and a real opportunity for the EU economy.
