Since a European Commissioner portfolio dedicated to that issue was created, consumer protection has become an emblematic policy of the European Institutions. The Commission is committed to advancing and harmonising consumer rights in many fields (financial services, transport, e-shopping, children’s safety, etc.) The Commission is also working to improve European consumers' confidence in cross-border purchasing of goods and services to strengthen the internal market for European businesses and SMEs and to stimulate growth. The European Institutions are also strengthening the legal arsenal to stimulate the digital economy and to increase confidence in Internet transactions.
The Commission has been involved in an extensive study concerning the revision of existing consumer rights and the development of a common framework of reference in contract law. The study has led to a proposition of directive on consumer rights and will create results that will affect all European businesses.
The introduction of European legislation on class action will also affect European citizens and companies.
